Chlorpyrifos
1. Chlorpyrifos is a broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide. While originally used to kill mosquitoes, it is no longer registered for this use.
2. As an agrochemical, this product is effective in controlling cutworms, corn rootworms, cockroaches, grubs, flea beetles, flies, termites, fire ants, and lice. It acts as an insect killer on grain, cotton, field, fruit, nut and vegetable crops, as well as lawns and ornamental plants.
3. Chlorpyrifos is also registered for direct use on sheep and turkeys. It is applicable to the horse site treatment, dog kennels, domestic dwellings, farm buildings, storage bins, and the commercial establishments.
4. The chemical acts on pests primarily as a contact poison, with some action as a stomach poison. It is available as granules, wettable powder, dustable powder, and emulsifiable concentrate.
Uses
1. The crops with the most intense chlorpyrifos use are cotton, corn, almonds, and fruit trees including oranges and apples.
2. This product is normally supplied as a 23.5% or 50% liquid concentrate. The recommended concentration for direct-spray pin point application is 0.5%. For wide area application, a 0.03–0.12% mix is recommended.
