Trichlorphon
CAS NO.: 52-68-6
Trichlorphon, also known as trichlorfon, is one of a family of insecticides referred to as organophosphates. It acts by interfering with an essential nervous system enzyme, cholinesterase.
Function
1. Trichlorphon is used as an insecticide.
2. It can be used to treat schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium but is no longer commercially available.
3. This agricultural chemical has been proposed for use in treatment of Alzheimer's disease, but use for that purpose is not currently recommended.
Crop | Pests | Rate of Use | Application |
Rice | Striped rice borer | 1000-1200 g/ha. | Spray |
Brassicaceous vegetable | Prodenia litura | 1050-1200 g/ha. |
Benefits
1. Trichlorphon is a selective insecticide, meaning that it kills selected insects, but spares many or most other organisms.
2. This agrochemical is toxic to target insects through direct applications and by ingestion. In other words, it works both by contact and stomach poison action.
Note
1. The chemical for farming use is moderately toxic by ingestion or dermal absorption. As with all organophosphates, it is readily absorbed through the skin. Skin which has come in contact with this material should be washed immediately with soap and water. Additionally, all contaminated clothing should be removed. Skin sensitivity or allergies can result from dermal exposure.
2. The product is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It is highly toxic by all routes of exposure.
