Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula of ZnO, and it works as a sulphide scavenger. The particle size distribution is fine enough to obtain a high specific surface area, thus realizing rapid and efficient removal of sulphide.

Typical Property
Chemical formula ZnO
Appearance Dry powder
Solubility in water at 20°C Insoluble
Specific gravity 5.60
Color Off white

Working Principle and Caution
1. This hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) scavenger readily reacts with sulphides to generate insoluble zinc sulphide under normal operating conditions, and the produced ZnS precipitate is also inert. Then, ZnS will either remain harmless in the mud system, or be removed by relevant solid control equipment.
2. Zinc oxide powder has been proven to be effective at normal PH range of drilling fluids. However, it is vital that the PH of drilling fluid should be kept at a value higher than 11 when H2S is anticipated. This is mainly for safety considerations, because high PH value simply ensures that dangerous H2 S remains in its dissociated forms, that is, HS- and S2- .

Safety and Handling
For safety considerations, personal protective equipment is highly recommended and actually it is a must. Before work, please refer to the precautions illustrated in the MSDS.

Packaging and Storage
Zinc oxide is packed in 25kg sacks.

The container should be closed, and then placed at a dry, well-ventilated area that is away from heat, sparks, flames and incompatible materials. For palletizing, banding, shrink-wrapping and stacking operations, please follow safe warehousing practices.
