LED grow lights enhance the photosynthesis in plants by adjusting the light wavelengths, which is especially important for thermophilic plants. The growth period of some plants can be shortened by controlling the length of time the plant is in bloom.

    Why does an LED grow light work better than an HPS or metal halogen lamp?
    According to experimental data, different wavelengths of light have a different influence on plant photosynthesis. For normal photosynthesis, the wavelength required is about 400-700nm, while 400-500nm (blue light) and 610-700nm (red light) have the largest impact on the photosynthesis process. Blue light promotes the growth of green leaves, protein synthesis and fruit formation, while red light promotes the growth of plant roots and contributes to blossoms and extends the flowering time, increasing production.

    An LED light source is also called a semiconductor light source. This type of light has a narrow wavelength and emits light in specific wavelengths, making it easy to control the light color. LED blue (470nm) and red (630m) is enough for plant growth. Due to that, an ideal choice is to use a combination of the two. The advisable ratio of LED red and blue lights is 4:1 to 9:1. A ratio of 6-9:1 is optional.

    As LED grow lights can emit a single color light, light utilization rates are high. However, as a sodium lamp lacks blue light, and a mercury lamp or compact fluorescent lamp does not emit red light, and all three are high powered lamps that use large amounts of energy LED lights are more often used, with a lower power equal to the higher power of other lights, saving up to 90% energy.

    To install an LED grow light, the general distance between the lamp and the plant blade should be about 0.5-1 meters. Continuous light 12-16 hours a day can completely replace sunshine and achieve the same results in plant growth.

    In table 2, a 100 400W metal halogen lamp, a 250W HPS and 50W LED grow light are taken as examples, which all meet the same lighting requirements for healthy plant growth.

    Assume that the working time of lamps is 10 hours per day and the cost per kilowatt hour is 1¥. A 50W LED grow light only consumes 55 kilowatt an hour per day, which saves up to 86% more energy saving than a 400W metal halogen lamp and 78% more energy than 250W high pressure sodium lamp. Therefore, the same percent of electricity bill saving is achieved. Compared with a metal halogen lamp, the monthly, yearly and 5 years' electricity bill cost savings when using an LED grow light is 10,350¥,124,200¥ and 621,000¥ respectively. Compared with a high pressure sodium lamp, the monthly, yearly and 5 years' electricity bill saving is 5,850¥, 70,200¥ and 451,000¥.
