Thrust ball bearings are a type of separable bearing, consisting of a shaft washer (which fit onto the shaft), a housing washer (which fit into the bearing housing), and a cage containing the steel balls. They are divided into single direction and double direction thrust ball bearings. Single direction thrust ball bearings can only withstand axial loads in one direction and can be used for unidirectional axial positioning. Double direction thrust ball bearings can withstand axial loads in two directions and can be used for bidirectional axial positioning. The cage is typically made of stamped steel, but it can also be machined from brass or made of solid brass or engineered plastics such as glass fiber reinforced nylon 66.
