A check valve is a type of one-way valve which permits flow in one direction only. The valve relies on the flow to push open it or shut it off. Backflow is not allowed within a check valve. There are a number of one-way valve styles available on the market today, including clapper, swing, and diaphragm check valves, just to name a few. Typical uses of the non-return valve are in pipelines where backflow is prohibited.
