Two methods of air compression
Positive displacement type This kind of air compressor functions by forcing air into a chamber whose volume is reduced to effect the compression.
- Piston compressors
Piston air compressors belong to positive displacement type. They apply the constant motion of pistons to pump air into an air chamber. Then the air is guided into the chamber by unidirectional valves and is compressed.
- Rotary screw compressors
This type of positive displacement air compression machine is equipped with two helical screws. Along with the turning of screws, air is guided into a chamber. Thus, the chamber volume is reduced.
- Vane compressors
Vane compressor is another type of positive displacement air compressor. In vane compressor, there is a slotted rotor. It equipped with varied blade placement. They can guide air into a chamber so that the volume is compressed.
Non-positive displacement type Five main applications
- Can provide high-pressure clean air to fill gas cylinders
- Can provide moderate-pressure clean air to a submerged surface supplied diver
- Can provide moderate-pressure air to power pneumatic tools
- Can be used for filling tires
- Can produce moderate-pressure air for macroscopic industrial processes.
Reciprocating piston type, rotary vane type and rotary screw type are the most common types of air compressors. And when there are very large applications, centrifugal compressors are commonly used.
Two main types of air compressor's pumps
Oil lubed and oiless lubed are two main types of air compressor's pumps. Compare with each other, oiless system is of more technical development than oil lubed system, and the air delivery is of better quality. But they are more expensive, louder and last shorter than the oiled lubed ones.
