The intelligent capacitor uses a thin layer of polypropylene film as the dielectric, coated on both sides with conductive metals which operate as electrodes. When a high voltage applies to the capacitor, the dielectric breaks down and creates a short circuit between the anodes and cathodes.

During dielectric breakdown, intense heat results, melting back the shorted area of the electrode, which in turn opens the short circuit. This process is called self healing, meaning that the capacitor can recharge after the breakdown. Built in line with national standards and IEC requirements, the self-healing capacitor is mainly used in low-voltage power supply lines to improve power factor rating, minimize power loss, and save electrical energy.
